1.1 You and Your Data

There is a lot of data about us and about our institutions on the internet – some we know of, other we do not know of. It is data we have shared, or has been shared by others, while other data might have been shared accidentally with the public. Let’s start this session by ‘Smart Googling’ yourself. Use the search engines capacity to map what data is out there about you and about the institution you work for.

Start by searching your name and your institution’s name in a search engine (use Google or an alternative search engine like DuckDuckGo). Try out different combination of the following searches:

“First name + last name”, “city”, and “name of your work”

Did you see anything surprising? Did you also check the images that are associated to your name? If not, do so!
